A Satyr, known as the companion and mentor to the wine god Dionysus. Silenus was found sleeping in a vineyard one day and was tied up and brought before King Midas of Phrygia. Midas set the goat-man free. In gratitude, Dionysus granted the king a wish, which turned out to be the power to turn whatever he touched into gold. When this "Midas touch" proved disastrous, Dionysus spared the king the further consequences of his greed. The god's mercy in this regard arose from the respect Midas had shown Silenus. This example shows a fantastic green patina of Silenus gazing at a cup (wine) offered forward with his arm draped in a flowing chlamys, and with the other hand raised in attention. This cast iron 4' 6" medallion was preserved from 245 Park Avenue in Manhattan, Grand Central Palace and served as architectural ornamentation along the parapet of the building with seven similar medallions. The medallions hung on the building’s façade until World War II. All of the medallions were originally cast in American foundries and were never recycled. This remaining medallion is a sculptural relief of the Greek god Hermes, with his Caduceus staff behind. Considered the Greek messenger god, Hermes tended to the needs of trade and commerce, and watched over merchants and their roads. The US Army Medical Corps Adopted the Caduceus in 1902 as the symbol of medicine erroneously as it should have been the Rod of Asclepius, the American Medical association used the Caduceus as it's symbol until recently.
